Bad disc?

We see this ALL the time...people have back pain, have an MRI done..and are told that they have a "BAD DISC". So the cascade of misconception begins..."Thats it! Whalla! Thats my problem!" Well...this is not usually the case. "Bad discs" tend to be incidental findings....meaning, the disc can be bulged or thinned out but that's NOT causing your pain. Research (see the article) confirms this and while this is fairly old news (they saw this in the 90s).... the misconception carries on. As insurance has changed and more people are paying for their services including X-Rays and MRIs...people are starting to catch on and coming in for services like ours before getting these images taken, since we can usually take care of their problems for less than they would've paid for a set of X-Rays, and SIGNIFICANTLY less than they would've paid for an MRI. Diagnostic imaging like X-Rays and MRI are very important in differentiating certain cases, but as the research shows, they much more often than not have no correlation to the patient's pain. Educating patients is a KEY factor in getting them the treatment they need as quickly as possible AND in reducing the costs.
